2021-22 Event Location Finalists Announced

US Quidditch is pleased to announce the finalists for events in the 2021-22 seasons.

Update on August 1

As mentioned in the effects of COVID-19 announcement article, after discussion with our partners at Sarpy County Tourism, USQ has decided not to host the Midwest Regional Championship in the 2020-21 season. Instead, Sarpy County is deferring their bid for this season to next season, and will host the Midwest Regional Championship at Papillion Landing in fall 2021. The feedback from last year’s Midwest Regional Championship, which was hosted in the same place, was tremendously positive. USQ and Sarpy County Tourism want to offer a similar experience to teams, spectators, vendors, and all other attendees. Given the potential for significantly less teams this season due to the impacts felt from COVID-19, it wouldn’t be possible to offer that this season. Deferring the bid to 2021 will allow for a safe, fun, and enjoyable experience for all participants and spectators.

Updates

We are still finalizing some information about the bids and may add additional information to this article. This section will be a log for updates to this article. We will notate the date a change is made and what that change is.

The bid process for the 2021-22 seasons began in November 2019 and the bid submission deadline was originally set for February 13, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the strain it placed on our city partners, the deadline was extended to early June. Overall, a total of 18 bids were submitted for our eight USQ events. The bid process will re-open in the fall for the 2022-23 season.

In July and August, USQ staff will conduct a combination of virtual and in-person site visits with finalist cities. In choosing the finalist cities we gathered feedback from staff and event volunteers. Teams, officials, volunteers, and fans will be invited to give continual feedback via this survey through August 30.

Final dates and locations for events in the 2021-22 season will be announced at the end of September.

For events this season, we will be posting an update with more information on what’s happening with the fall and spring portions of the season on July 29. A virtual town hall on USQ’s Facebook page will be held on July 30 to go over the plan and answer any questions from the community. For more information on policy and program updates in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this page contains everything that has been announced so far.

Bid Evaluation Process

US Quidditch evaluated submitted bids based on the facility quality (including field type - grass vs turf, and if the fields have lights), ease of travel into the city (proximity to major airport), and availability of in-kind services and financial support. Each of the bid packages of the event finalists listed below met USQ bid requirements and expectations in more than one of these categories. Further explanation of the bid process can be found on the event bidding page.

Another major consideration was the experience of Black and non-Black people of color as they travel to and attend these events. Player safety in all forms is our number one priority for USQ events and programs. Going forward, we will be addressing safety for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) attendees more directly in our bid manual, as part of our continued commitment to uplifting the experiences of marginalized communities and combating racial injustice. USQ recognizes that BIPOC attendees often have not felt safe in the communities where USQ has hosted previous events, and moreover BIPOC attendees have experienced unsafe situations when traveling between their homes and the host city. We are starting to have a dialogue with our city partners about what USQ and host cities can do to combat unsafe environments. We are also discussing the issue with staff, including the diversity, equity, and inclusion committee, as we continue the bid evaluation process.

Lastly, we also put a focus on developing new city partnerships. This connects directly with our vision of ensuring that more people in the US are aware of quidditch as a sport. Working with new city partners expands our exposure into areas where the community might not be fully aware of our sport, our leagues, or our events.
