Gameplay Information for 2020 South Championship

The gameplay format and schedule for collegiate teams competing at the 2020 South Regional Championship are announced below.

The Nearly Headless Knights have informed USQ that they are withdrawing from this year’s South Regional Championship. As a result, the gameplay format has been adjusted. It’s available to view here.

The teams will participate in a double round robin format. After these games, any matchups that are split 1-1 will play a third game to determine the winner of the matchup. The two bids to US Quidditch Cup 13, as well as who is the collegiate division champion, will be based on the final rankings of teams, which will take into account all games played that weekend.

As we cannot project which, if any, matchups will require a third game, USQ staff on site will be flexible in scheduling to allow sufficient breaks for teams to avoid back to back game slots. Any time remaining on Sunday following the conclusion of the last tiebreaker matches will be filled with a pickup quidditch event open to players, coaches and spectators. Medical staff will remain present during these pick up games and they will be overseen by certified officials. Register for the pick-up games through Eventbrite here.

The 2020 USQ South Regional Championship will be a round robin tournament with no bracket play. All teams will compete in the round robin to determine the bids. The tournament will take place February 15-16, 2020 in Haines City, Florida at the Feltrim Sports Village at the Balmoral Resort.

The gameplay schedule can be found here, while information on the regional championship can be found here. RSVP to the Facebook event to get more updates.

COLLEGIATE DIVISION

The teams will participate in a double round robin format for all five (5) teams to determine the collegiate regional champion as well as the two (2) collegiate teams who qualify for US Quidditch Cup 13. The schedule for the second round robin will be determined by the rankings after the first round robin. All five teams will play each other twice.

To learn more about qualification, please see this article.

The five teams competing at the event are as follows (in alphabetical order):

Florida Gulf Coast Quidditch
Florida State Quidditch
Gamecock Quidditch
Nearly Headless Knights
University of Florida Club Quidditch

GENERAL GAMEPLAY INFORMATION

Rankings during the tournament will be based on the USQ tiebreaker policy. The primary comparison will be win percentage, followed by head-to-head, then win record before snitch catch, then quaffle points against, then quaffle points for, and then snitch catch percentage.

Please note that the USQ forfeit procedure will be in effect during this event. Teams who forfeit a match may be required to forfeit the remainder of their scheduled games and may be subject to disqualification from the remainder of the tournament. Teams who are disqualified from their regional championship are ineligible to compete at US Quidditch Cup 13 through either a bid earned at the regional championship or an at large bid. This includes bids that were already earned at the event prior to the disqualification.

  • Forfeits done in game are reviewed on a case-by-case basis for both forfeiting the rest of the tournament and disqualification.
  • Forfeits due to violations of tournament policy will always result in automatic disqualification.
  • Forfeits done before the game begins will always cause the team to forfeit the rest of the tournament, and will be reviewed for disqualification.
