The gameplay format and schedule for collegiate and club teams competing at the 2019 Northeast Regional Championship are announced below.
Update 10/21/19: Due to unforeseen circumstances, Skidmore Quidditch has dropped from this event. The collegiate pools have been adjusted slightly, and will now be four pools of four (4) teams each. New York Pigeons has been moved from Pool D (their original pool) to Pool C (the pool that Skidmore was originally put in). No other teams are changing pools. The gameplay, officials, and volunteer schedules have all been updated to reflect this change. Teams, referees, and snitch runners, please pay particular attention to the officials schedule as we did have to make adjustments to what was originally posted over the weekend.
Update 10/17/19: An error was made in the rankings for collegiate teams, and as such the pools have changed. See the updated list below or the spreadsheet for the full schedule. The bracket format has been adjusted slightly and is updated in the schedule spreadsheet.
The 2019 USQ Northeast Regional Championship will be a pool play into bracket play tournament in the collegiate division and a round robin tournament in the club circuit event.
The collegiate teams will participate in pool play in four pools, two of four (4) and one of five (5), before continuing on to a bracket structure to determine the collegiate regional champion as well as the seven (7) collegiate teams who qualify for US Quidditch Cup 13. To learn more about qualification, please see this article.
The pools for the collegiate division are as follows (listed in alphabetical order):
Pool A: Emerson College Quidditch, Harvard Horntails, Syracuse Snare Quidditch Club, University of Rochester Thestrals
Pool B: Brandeis Quidditch, Macaulay Honors College Marauders, Middlebury College Quidditch, New York University Quidditch
Pool C: RIT Dark Marks, RPI Quidditch, Rutgers University Quidditch, Skidmore Quidditch
Pool D: Boston University Quidditch, New York Pigeons, Tufts University Tufflepuffs, University of Massachusetts Amherst Death Beaters, University of Vermont Quidditch Club
On Sunday, 16 teams will make it into bracket play. Teams ranked first in their pool will be placed in the championship bracket. Teams ranked second, third, or fourth in their pool will enter the additional qualification brackets. Teams placed into the secondary bracket will still have a chance to compete for the regional championship title.
The original ranked list was divided into five pots by seed, and each pool had one team randomly drawn from each pot. For pot 5, one pool was randomly drawn to have the larger pool size. The rankings were based on the USQ standings, per the rankings algorithm described here. The pots that teams were drawn from are as follows:
Pot 1: Harvard Horntails, New York University Quidditch, RPI Quidditch, Tufts University Tufflepuffs
Pot 2: Boston University Quidditch, Middlebury College Quidditch, RIT Dark Marks, Syracuse Snare Quidditch Club
Pot 3: Macaulay Honors College Marauders, Rutgers University Quidditch, University of Rochester Thestrals, University of Vermont Quidditch Club
Pot 4: Brandeis Quidditch, Emerson College Quidditch, Skidmore Quidditch, University of Massachusetts Amherst Death Beaters
Pot 5: New York Pigeons
The club teams will participate in a single round robin, playing each other team one time. The club circuit event will take place on Saturday only. There will be no bracket in the club circuit event. Games played in the club division will be worth 2 circuit points per game. Learn more about circuit events here.
The five community teams competing at this event are (listed in alphabetical order):
Rankings during the tournament will be based on the USQ tiebreaker policy. The primary comparison will be win percentage, followed by head-to-head, then quaffle points against, then quaffle points for, and then snitch catch percentage.
Please note that the USQ forfeit procedure will be in effect during this event. Teams who forfeit a match may be required to forfeit the remainder of their scheduled games and may be subject to disqualification from the remainder of the tournament. Teams who are disqualified from their regional championship are ineligible to compete at US Quidditch Cup 13 through either a bid earned at the regional championship or an at large bid. This includes bids that were already earned at the event prior to the disqualification.
