The gameplay format and schedule for collegiate teams competing at the 2019 Midwest Regional Championship are announced below.
The 2019 USQ Midwest Regional Championship will be a pool play into bracket play tournament for collegiate teams. There is no club circuit event.
The teams will participate in pool play in two pools of five (5) teams and one pool of four (4) teams, before continuing on to a bracket structure to determine the collegiate regional champion as well as the seven (7) collegiate teams who qualify for US Quidditch Cup 13. To learn more about qualification, please see this article.
The pools for the collegiate division are as follows (listed in alphabetical order):
Pool A: Columbia College Chicago Quidditch, Creighton Quidditch, Maryville University Quidditch, Minnesota Quidditch, University of Northern Colorado
Pool B: Illinois State University Firebirds, Iowa Quidditch Club, Marquette University Quidditch, Mizzou Club Quidditch, Wichita State University
Pool C: Illini Ridgebacks Quidditch, Kansas Quidditch, SIUE Quidditch Club, Southern Illinois University
On Sunday, all 14 teams will make it into bracket play. The top four seeds will be placed in the championship bracket. Teams seeded fifth to eighth will be placed in the secondary bracket, and will still have a chance to compete for the regional championship title. The remaining six teams will be placed into additional qualification brackets.
The original ranked list was divided into five pots by seed, and each pool had one team randomly drawn from each pot. The rankings were based on the USQ standings, per the rankings algorithm described here. The pots that teams were drawn from are as follows:
Pot 1: Creighton Quidditch, Kansas Quidditch, Mizzou Club Quidditch
Pot 2: Illini Ridgebacks Quidditch, Illinois State University Firebirds, Minnesota Quidditch
Pot 3: Marquette University Quidditch, Maryville University Quidditch, SIUE Quidditch Club
Pot 4: Columbia College Chicago Quidditch, Iowa Quidditch Club, Southern Illinois University
Pot 5: University of Northern Colorado, Wichita State University
GENERAL GAMEPLAY INFORMATION
Rankings during the tournament will be based on the USQ tiebreaker policy. The primary comparison will be win percentage, followed by head-to-head, then win record before snitch catch, then quaffle points against, then quaffle points for, and then snitch catch percentage.
Please note that the USQ forfeit procedure will be in effect during this event. Teams who forfeit a match may be required to forfeit the remainder of their scheduled games and may be subject to disqualification from the remainder of the tournament. Teams who are disqualified from their regional championship are ineligible to compete at US Quidditch Cup 13 through either a bid earned at the regional championship or an at large bid. This includes bids that were already earned at the event prior to the disqualification.
Forfeits done in game are reviewed on a case-by-case basis for both forfeiting the rest of the tournament and disqualification.
Forfeits due to violations of tournament policy will always result in automatic disqualification.
Forfeits done before the game begins will always cause the team to forfeit the rest of the tournament, and will be reviewed for disqualification.
