The 2018 USQ Midwest Regional Championship will be a round robin tournament in the community division, and a pool play into bracket play tournament in the collegiate division.
The gameplay schedule can be found here, while information on the regional championship can be found here.
The community teams will participate in a triple round robin, playing each other team three times. There will be no bracket in the community division.
The four community teams competing at this event are (listed in alphabetical order):
Each community team will play each other community team three times: at least once on Saturday and at least once on Sunday. The specific Sunday schedule will be released on Saturday evening, so the teams can be assigned slots based on the collegiate bracket, accommodating conflicts where possible for community players who coach a collegiate team.
The community team with the highest ranking at the end of the tournament will be the Regional Champion in their division and will qualify for US Quidditch Cup 12. Additionally, the community team ranked second will also qualify for the national championship. To learn more about qualification, please see this article.
The collegiate teams will participate in pool play in three pools, two of four (4) and one of five (5), before continuing on to a bracket structure to determine the collegiate regional champion as well as the seven (7) collegiate teams who qualify for US Quidditch Cup 12. To learn more about qualification, please see this article.
The pools for the collegiate division are as follows (listed in alphabetical order):
Pool A: Columbia College Chicago Quidditch, Creighton Quidditch, Iowa Quidditch Club, Kansas Quidditch, Marquette University Quidditch
Pool B: Illini Ridgebacks Quidditch, Maryville University Quidditch, Mizzou Quidditch, SIUE Quidditch Club
Pool C: Illinois State University Firebirds, Minnesota Quidditch, Southern Illinois University, University of Northern Colorado
On Sunday, the top four teams in each pool will make it into bracket play. All teams will be initially placed in the championship bracket.
The original ranked list was divided into five pots by seed, and each pool had one team randomly drawn from each pot. The rankings were based on the USQ standings, per the rankings algorithm described here. The pots that teams were drawn from are as follows:
Pot 1: Mizzou Quidditch, Kansas Quidditch, Minnesota Quidditch
Pot 2: Creighton Quidditch, SIUE Quidditch Club, Southern Illinois University
Pot 3: Marquette University Quidditch, Maryville University Quidditch, Illinois State University Firebirds
Pot 4: Illini Ridgebacks Quidditch, Columbia College Chicago Quidditch, University of Northern Colorado
Pot 5: Iowa Quidditch Club
Rankings during the tournament will be based on the USQ tiebreaker policy. The primary comparison will be win percentage, followed by head-to-head, then quaffle points against, then quaffle points for, and then snitch catch percentage.
Please note that the USQ forfeit procedure will be in effect during this event. Teams who forfeit a match may be required to forfeit the remainder of their scheduled games and may be subject to disqualification from the remainder of the tournament. Teams who are disqualified from their regional championship are ineligible to compete at US Quidditch Cup 11 through either a bid earned at the regional championship or an at large bid. This includes bids that were already earned at the event prior to the disqualification.
Forfeits done in game are reviewed on a case-by-case basis for both forfeiting the rest of the tournament and disqualification.
Forfeits due to violations of tournament policy will always result in automatic disqualification.
Forfeits done before the game begins will alway cause the team to forfeit the rest of the tournament, and will be reviewed for disqualification.
