2018-19 Event Location Finalists Announced

US Quidditch is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2018-19 season events.

Updates

We are still finalizing some information about the bids and may add additional information to this article. This section will be a log for updates to this article. We will notate the date a change is made and what that change is.

The bid process for the 2018-19 season began in September 2017 and the bid submission deadline was February 16, 2018. Overall, we received a total of 29 bids for nine events in the upcoming season. The bid process will re-open in May 2018 for the 2019-20 season and beyond.

In May, USQ staff will conduct site visits with finalist cities. We will also conduct a thorough internal review of the locations with USQ volunteers. Final event dates and locations will be announced by mid-June.

Bid Evaluation Process

US Quidditch evaluated submitted bids based on the location of the bid, the quality of facilities, the amount of financial support (both direct financial support and additional in-kind support), and the level of community support, including letters of nominations from local teams as applicable. Each of the bid packages of the event finalists listed below surpassed USQ bid requirements and expectations in at least one of these categories. Further explanation of the bid process can be found on the event bidding page.

In addition, we gave the following considerations additional weight:

  • Flexibility for different regional gameplay formats
  • Weather
  • Availability of synthetic turf fields
  • Location in relation to current official teams
  • LGBTQIA+ Rights

As announced here, the strategic planning process will be examining regional boundaries and competitive structure for USQ events, among other issues. We also looked for event locations that will give us flexibility in event formats next season as we finalize these portions of the strategic plan.

Last spring, the Texas legislature was discussing gender-based discriminatory legislation. USQ released a statement regarding two of those bills, SB6 and HB2788. While those bills did not pass, other bills that discriminate against LGBTQIA+ individuals did pass. In reaction to this, the state of California passed a travel ban that prohibited state sponsored travel from California to a number of states, including Texas. Other states have implemented similar travel bans that limit public employee travel to states that have enacted legislation viewed as discriminatory towards LGBTQIA+ individuals. In some cases, the travel bans impact students at public universities, in addition to public employees. As we stated last year, we are strongly against gender-based discrimination in all forms.

USQ actively solicits bids from many states, including those who do not contain finalists this season. In the cases where a state has multiple finalists, the bids selected were high quality and the best option given all the factors we look at when evaluating bids. As part of the review process, we will be talking with cities about our views regarding LGBTQIA+ rights and our opposition to gender-based discrimination.

Players and teams with comments or questions about any of the bids in their region are encouraged to contact Events Director Mary Kimball at events@usquidditch.org.

Overview of Finalists

Last year, we listed specific date availability for each regional championship finalist. Given the work that will be done over the next couple of months with strategic planning and the impact that will have on events next season, we have elected to withhold that information for this announcement. Also, some of our finalists may have additional availability within their facilities as we go further into the review process.
