The gameplay format and schedule for the 2017 Midwest Regional Championship are announced below.
The 2017 USQ Midwest Regional Championship will be a round robin tournament in the community division, and a pool play into bracket play tournament in the collegiate division. The gameplay schedule can be found here, while information on the regional championship can be found here.
The community teams will participate in a triple round robin, playing each other team three times. There will be no bracket in the community division.
The community team with the highest ranking at the end of the tournament will be the Regional Champion in their division and will qualify for US Quidditch Cup 11. To learn more about qualification, please see this article.
The collegiate teams will participate in pool play in two pools, one of five (5) and one of six (6), before continuing on to a bracket structure to determine the collegiate regional champion and the seven (7) collegiate teams who qualify for US Quidditch Cup 11.
The pools for the collegiate division are as follows (listed in alphabetical order):
Pool A: Illinois State University Firebirds, Mizzou Quidditch, SIUE Quidditch Club, Southern Illinois University, University of Northern Colorado, Wisconsin Quidditch
Pool B: Creighton Quidditch, Illini Ridgebacks Quidditch Team, Kansas Quidditch, Marquette University Quidditch, Minnesota Quidditch
On Sunday, the top five teams in each pool will make it into bracket play. Teams ranked first or second in their pool will be placed in the championship bracket and earn a bid for US Quidditch Cup 11. Teams ranked third, fourth, or fifth in their pool will enter the qualification bracket to compete for one of 3 additional US Quidditch Cup 11 bids.
Originally, we intended to have the collegiate division participate in a single round robin, playing each other team once. That plan was based on the number of anticipated teams in the Midwest region at the start of this season. We are excited that the the number of teams has exceeded our initial estimates. However, the increased number of collegiate teams means we needed to go with a different gameplay format to ensure a high quality event experience for all teams at the facility we are using for the event. We made the change from round robin to pool play into bracket in an effort to take into consideration the resources available at the tournament, having the gameplay format fit the needs of the specific region, while also trying to balance fair, competitive gameplay that ensures a level playing field across all regions trying to qualify for US Quidditch Cup.
Rankings during the tournament will be based on the USQ tiebreaker policy. The primary comparison will be win percentage, followed by head-to-head, then quaffle points against, then quaffle points for, and then snitch catch percentage.
Please note that the USQ forfeit procedure will be in effect during this event. Teams who forfeit a match may be required to forfeit the remainder of their scheduled games and may be subject to disqualification from the remainder of the tournament. Teams who are disqualified from their regional championship are ineligible to compete at US Quidditch Cup 11 through either a bid earned at the regional championship or an at large bid. This includes bids that were already earned at the event prior to the disqualification.
Forfeits done in game are on a reviewed case-by-case basis for both forfeiting the rest of the tournament and disqualification.
Forfeits due to violations of tournament policy will always result in automatic disqualification.
Forfeits done before the game begins will alway cause the team to forfeit the rest of the tournament, and will be reviewed for disqualification.
