2016 “Starter Kit” Equipment Grant Winner

This season's recipient of the USQ “Starter Kit” Equipment Grant is Mile High Quidditch Club.

Mile High Quidditch Club is a new community team in the Midwest region, based in Denver, Colorado. The team has 25 athletes practicing with the program so far, led by a core of veteran players from the University of Northern Colorado, with help from other players who have moved to the Denver area.

One of the biggest challenges facing Mile High Quidditch Club is the relative scarcity of teams in their area. Other than the University of Northern Colorado, the nearest team is an 8-hour drive away. The team already has plans to compete in Salt Lake City and Fort Collins, Colorado, in addition to traveling to the Midwest Regional Championship to fight for a spot at US Quidditch Cup 10. As they said in their application, “Quidditch does not have much of a presence in Colorado and we are determined to change that. Right now, our hoops are held together by duct tape, and our bludgers and quaffles have seen better days. We also do not have enough brooms for all of our team members at practices. If we received this starter kit, our resources can be spent on traveling to tournaments, rather than replacing equipment.”

The Equipment Grant is eligible to first-year USQ official teams with at least 10 members and includes:

  • One full set of Peterson hoops (six hoops per set)

  • One Baden Matchpoint size 5 quaffle

  • Three Champion bludgers

  • One snitch short set (includes shorts, sock, and tennis ball)

  • Two full sets of headbands (seven per set: one green, one yellow, two black, three white)

  • Two sets of practice pinnies (12 per set, each set a different color)

  • One set of short practice cones (20 per set)

  • One athletic first aid kit
