USQ announces its first referee of the month for the 2015-2016 season: Austin Pitts.
Austin Pitts has been selected as USQ’s Referee of the Month of September for the 2015-2016 playing season. Pitts was chosen due to the number of different events he’s helped officiate so far this season; with many of these, his presence on site as an officiant was critical in making the events happen. He’s not only an excellent head referee, but an eager and accomplished teacher, qualities that are important and necessary for the league right now.
Pitts is captain of Kansas Quidditch this year and is in his third year playing for the team. He was certified as a USQ head referee just last season, but he started his officiating career as a Little League Baseball umpire in his hometown when he was 16. Outside of quidditch, he is a huge Kansas City sports fan, even during the down years.
“I'm a firm believer in being the change you want to see, so I'm more than happy to help as a referee. I strongly encourage more people to become certified at any level as a referee and to work on improving,” said Pitts.
Pitts would like to thank Samy Mousa for forcing him to read the rulebook and Dan Hanson for putting up with random messages throughout last spring and summer about getting more involved with refereeing.
