Scoring
Check out the top scorers at the Southwest Regionals. Leading the list is Texas A&M University's (College Station, TX) Drew Wasikowski, with 210 total points and 42 PPG. But who ranks below the Aggie phenom and what teams do they play for?
Only 13 players averaged 20 or more points per game at the Southwest Regional Championships. 9 different teams were represented in that elite 13-player group, showing that many teams have outstanding star players. These statistics give due credit to fantastic players and leaders on the pitch like Eric Reyes of Texas State University (San Marcos, TX) (38 PPG), Joey Reynebeau of the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville, AR) (34 PPG), Brad Armentor of Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA) (32.5 PPG) and Craig Garrison of Roadrunner QC (San Antonio, TX) (30 PPG). The best teams had the most players scoring at least one goal per game. The University of Texas (Austin, TX) topped the list with 10 players averaging a minimum of 10 PPG and Baylor University (Waco, TX) came in second, featuring 7 player averaging 10 or more PPG. Conclusion: Texas and Baylor's depth and amount of contributing players was unmatched, and, because of this, each team advanced to the Southwest Regional Finals. Points-Per-Minute Averages Look at Texas, Texas A&M and Baylor's points-per-minute and points-allowed-per-minute averages through pool play and the quarterfinals. Observe the changes in the averages when Texas and Texas A&M play Baylor. How did Baylor beat the two powerhouses? Texas' seemingly unstoppable offense was scoring a goal every minute up until the finals, when their goal scoring frequency was cut in half by the stout Baylor defense. With the difficulty of scoring greatly and suddenly increasing, Texas was thrown off guard. The Longhorns only mustered 80 points that game--their lowest final tally since Mardi Gras Cup. Baylor's defense seemingly had no effect on Texas A&M. Texas A&M's offense continued to produce at a rate similar to their tournament average against Baylor (5.09 points per minute). The Aggies' defense failed them, though, allowing 6.48 points per minute--almost twice their tournament average. A breakdown on the defensive end, which included allowing Baylor captain Paul Willard to score 7 goals, doomed Texas A&M.Conclusion: The statistics show that Baylor's offense outperformed Texas A&M and their defense shut down Texas. The Bears' Southwest Regional Championship run should be credited to their play at both ends of the pitch.
Snitches
Go to the "Overall-Snitch" page and after you look up your favorite snitch's statistics, look at the breakdown of decision, suicide and no decision snatches.
Only 12% of games at the Southwest Regional Championship were decided by a snatch. This percentage is lower than every other American regional. 24% of games at the Southwest Regional Championship ended in a suicide grab. In pool play, teams far out of range used the snatch to get an easy +30 points in point differential and possibly better their median score. Conclusion: The Southwest has the greatest disparity between teams, creating lopsided and out of snitch range games. Suicide snatches have become an important tactic to improve point differential and walk away from a match with a more respectable score.
