It's been a scorcher this morning, as the heat keeps rising on and off the pitch. You can follow live score updates all day online, but what's the story behind the stats?
Quidkids didn't have to wait long for the first upset of the day. The round-one match between No. 55 Florida State University (Tallahassee, FL) and No. 16 Marquette University (Milwaukee, WI) surprised spectators, as FSU matched the play of their pot one opponents.
The score remained close, but not fully within snitch range, for the majority of game and FSU was behind when the snitch charged back onto the field. The FSU seeker, Aidin O'neill-Speciale, played defensively against his opponent, demonstrating good faith that his chasers would quickly catch up. The moment the point difference reached 30, O'neill-Speciale sprung into action and flung himself at snitch for a catch that tied the game.

All eyes were on the seekers during overtime, as the rest of gameplay engaged in the call-and-answer of goals and bludger control. FSU's second seeker, Trey Hutchisson, caught the snitch again with an untraditional swipe attack. The final score was 110^-80.
It still remains to be seen if this upset can turn into an underdog story; FSU lost their second game against No. 74 Boston Riot (Boston, MA) 50-70* and play No. 35 Northern Arizona (Flagstaff, AZ) today at 3:40. One thing is certain though: pool six has been blown wide open and the top spot—which was Marquette's to lose—is up for grabs.
The day's other surprising results included No. 39 Central Michigan's (Mt. Pleasant, MI) victory over No. 23 Villanova (Villanova, PA) 60*-50 and No. 78 Paris Phénix (Paris, Fra.) victory of No. 54 Oklahoma State (Stillwater, OK) 80*-70. The trend of the day seems to be close-scoring match-ups that leave it all up to the snitch game.
