The Daily Snitch--April 1

We interrupt the barrage of World Cup predictions ...

We interrupt the barrage of World Cup predictions to bring you the typical Monday Snitch. As of publishing the Monday Snitch only has scores from the Alfred University (Alfred, NY) Snow Belt Conference Meet. Last week, we did not yet have results from the Spartan Quidditch Bonanza hosted by Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI), so we will also take a quick look at that tournament.

Spartan Quidditch Bonanza

Three World Cup Division I teams: No. 20 University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI), No. 24 Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI) and No. 37 Central Michigan University (Mount Pleasant, MI) competed in the tournament with Michigan State taking home the title. After the first day, the nine-team tournament was split into two groups for the second day with the top four teams competing in the first group, while the three other returning teams played in the second.

The hosts earned the top seed after a 3-0 performance, while Central Michigan also went undefeated to place in the top group. Michigan and No. 75 Eastern Michigan (Ypsilanti, MI) rounded out Group 1, each dropping a single match: Michigan 90*-80 to Central Michigan, and Eastern Michigan 100-60* to Michigan State.

On the second day, Michigan State, and Central Michigan both went 2-1, while Michigan went 1-1. Michigan State overcame Eastern Michigan, and Michigan in its first two games before falling to Central Michigan. Central Michigan meanwhile fell to Michigan before beating Eastern Michigan and Michigan State. Ultimately, Michigan State was crowned the victors based on point differential.

No. 81 Miami University (Oxford, OH) should have fared better. After finishing second at the Rocky Top Rumble in February, they had seemed to round a corner, but failing to qualify for the top group here was disappointing. Miami went 1-2 on the first day, with the key match being a 140*-130 overtime loss to Eastern Michigan.

Central Michigan turned in a strong showing, as they look to be every bit as tough as there more well-known state rivals. Similarly, Eastern Michigan did well to qualify for the top group.

Rising: Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan

Falling: Miami

Alfred Snow Belt Conference

Alfred University hosted No. 41 University of Rochester (Rochester, NY) and No. 43 SUNY Geneseo (Geneseo, NY) for a brief tournament.

Each team played each other twice with the Rochester-Geneseo matches being unofficial due to a lack of referees. Rochester and Geneseo split two unofficial games with Geneseo winning the first one in a low-scoring affair, while Rochester took the second in overtime.

Alfred managed one win, knocking off Geneseo 80*-30 in a game where Geneseo did not play many of their starters.

Rising: Alfred

Falling: Geneseo   Updates:  A previous version of this article incorrectly mentioned the University of Miami rather than Miami University. The IQA apologizes for this error.
