Sam Houston State University Quidditch (Huntsville ,TX) captured the first ever Bottom of the Bracket championship, defeating Roadrunners Quidditch 60*-40 (San Antonio ,TX) in the final match.
The eventual champion Bearkats finished fourth in the preliminary rounds with a 2-1 record, dropping their lone match to the eventual top-seed Silver Phoenixes (College Station, TX) 60*-40. As the No. 4 seed, Sam Houston State University defeated Loyola (New Orleans, LA) 120*-40 to advance to the semifinals where they avenged their loss to the Silver Phoenixes 70*-40.
The Roadrunners entered the Championship match as the No. 2 seed, after earning a 2-1 record in the preliminary rounds. In the preliminary rounds, the Roadrunners overcame Houston Baptist University (Houston, TX) and University of North Texas (Denton, TX), suffering their only loss to Sam Houston State University.
The Roadrunners advanced to the semifinals by way of a forfeit, and to the championship with a 90*-50 win over host Rice University Quidditch (Houston, TX).
The championship contest was a back-and-forth affair that remained within snitch range for the duration. Ultimately Sam Houston State Quidditch was successful in grabbing all but two snitches on the day, and did not allow more than four goals in any contest, propelling them to the title.
Check back later in the week for more on the Bottom of the Bracket.
