On December the 28th the town of Latina, Italy, hosted the latest edition of “Potteraduno,” a gathering organized by the association “Giratempoweb,” in which kids and adults had the opportunity to visit Snape's potions stands, book shops and many other magical activities. The theme of the festival was clear: the fantastic world that has come from the pen of J.K. Rowling. This time however, the organizers decided to outdo themselves and organize the Italian Winter Cup of quidditch, valid for the Italian Quidditch Championship. The Coni Stadium in Latina witnessed two teams facing in a stark challenge, playing a best-of-three series to decide the winner: Latina Firestars versus SPQR Roma. The SPQR team (in traditional Roman yellow-red attire) quickly won the first game thanks to the brave action of their seeker, the 21 year-old Edoardo Montagrandi, who with an agile thrust grabbed the golden snitch; the two goals scored by Latina chaser Mario Savo, which previously had granted a short-lived advantage for Firestars, were therefore useless.

The second game though, immediately started in a combative way with the unexpected goal of the Latina Firestars' keeper Luca Minetti. The Firestars dominated the game and score again, quickly reaching 30 points, and, thanks to the quick Firestars' seeker Nicola Rigliaco, finally succeeding in catching the Snitch, marking the end of the match. The final result was therefore 60* – 0 for the home team, which were then awarded by default the final game when the opponents pulled out of the match because of the inability to continue to play of the Roman player of Greek origin Carlo Boumis. SPQR Roma decided to withdraw and the Latina Firestars won the the Winter Cup, in their first match of the season. It is important to point out the great contribution of the voluntary snitch, the young Venetian of American origin Enrico Higginbotham, who has experience playing quidditch in the USA. Our praise also goes to the warm public which has enthusiastically supported each team, reminding us of the atmosphere of a real magical Quidditch match. A roster of each team may be found below.
