Herb running (in definition) is running between all of the herb gardens in the most efficient way possible. It takes a while to perfect an effective route that runs between the one in the area of the swamp (forget what it is called), the one by draynor manor and the one to the north of Ardy, the one in Catherby as well as (if you have completed the quest) the patch at Trollheim.
The aim is to cultivate (usually) that most lucrative seeds of herb which leaves the greatest profit when harvested. I'm not sure of the ideal level at which to begin or even on the current pricing. However, I would probably not recommend starting with your level until you unlock the other herb options.

Doing the lumbridge/draynor acheivments will give you an easy teleport towards the Draynor patch.
When you farm, you must be using supercompost at all times. Particularly when you want to make money from the herbing. In addition, to clarify any doubts, it is not possible to pay a farmer to watch your plants, but you can only have him watch the vegetable plots and the fruit within the allotment.
Overall there are plenty of great options to consider, but herb farming is a excellent money-making strategy when it is perfected down to the last gold piece. It is a very lucrative option in the event that it is kept to a schedule in addition to providing some buy RS gold decent (but far from the top) quantity of farming experience during the process.
