Become a Referee

WE NEED YOU TO JOIN THE STRIPES!

As a fast-paced sport with many different moving parts, quidditch requires several officials. Every quidditch match is officiated by six or seven referees: a head referee, lead assistant referee, up to three assistant referees, and two goal judges. These referees work together to ensure that each game is run safely and effectively. USQ’s referee program aims to certify referees to ensure the highest standards nationwide.

Referee certification is an ongoing process. This process consists of: written and practical tests, is supplemented by referee development programs, online resources, and a system to continually review referee performance.

Only certified head referees age 17 years and up may be paid to officiate an adult competitive quidditch game. Head referees will earn $20 for all events, sanctioned or unsanctioned. Lead assistant referees are paid $10 per official USQ match. Any individual who wants to serve as a Head Referee or Lead Assistant Referee must follow certification and then upgrade their player membership or purchase referee membership. All referee memberships will expire on June 30. Upgrades can be done on the 'Membership' tab of your USQ dashboard or you can follow the instructions at the bottom of this page.

2021 Summer Certification Update

All written referee tests are now available!

REFEREE CERTIFICATION

Certification Deadline: Certification requirements must be completed at least 24 hours before a scheduled event at which a referee intends to officiate. The written tests for the 2021 - 22 season are now available.

Assistant Referees:

  • Must pass the Assistant Referee Written Test.
  • Anyone may serve as an Assistant Referee in official matches outside of USQ hosted events. Certified assistant referees are required for official matches at USQ Regional Championships and US Quidditch Cup.

Lead Assistant Referees:

Referee Candidates (No Tier):

Returning Head Referees (Tier 1-4):

Tier System: The Referee Tier system is designed to allow for ease of understanding and use. To move up a tier or tiers (including returning to the tier held before a tier demotion) a referee must take a field test with a certified proctor. Based on the results of this field test and past performance, their tier will be reevaluated. A referee’s official tier will be included in their field test results.

Please note that being a certified referee is an ongoing responsibility. Referees are expected to maintain professional standards at all times and referee certification is subject to examination and withdrawal at any time based on professionalism and performance.

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS FOR WRITTEN REFEREE TESTS

A version of the written referee tests with additional time provided is available for any potential referees who need special accommodations. The tests are otherwise identical to the standard versions. If you need to utilize this option, please contact referees@usquidditch.org. We need a minimum of two business days to provide you with a link to the test, so please plan accordingly regarding referee test deadlines.
